This article gives a global analysis of this type of cultural issues in translation from a descriptive point of view. After studying the reason why culture is a systematic problem in translation and defining cultural-specific items from the point of view of translation, the article puts forward a new descriptive methodology for their analysis. This is applied to the Spanish translations of Hammett's The Maltese Falcon. It is shown how the reception pole works its own priorities and requirements, and how these change over time.
