The author starts off by listing three categories of factors that impinge on the quality of subtitles: firstly, physical constraints imposed by the medium itself – lack of synchronisation, excessive reduction etc.; secondly, metatextual constraints such as the working conditions – poor wages, absurd deadlines, poor original; and thirdly, linguistic constraints. This paper focuses on this last category. In the mode of translation, as uniquely vulnerable as subtitling, mistakes do not easily pass unnoticed. Therefore, a determinant factor that facilitates the task of the subtitler and helps to reduce potential comprehension mistakes to a minimum is a good dialogue list. The author discusses different types of dialogue lists, provides an example of a complete list, and shows how such lists can result in high quality target products.
