Abstract

An increasing part of the language in the media worldwide is translated from English: best-selling books as well as more ‘anonymous’ material (news items in newspapers and on the radio, advertisements, manuals, etc.), and – of special interest here – innumerable ‘international’ films and TV programmes. Such Anglophone sources influence practically all the world’s languages. How is the situation in minor speech communities, where English is becoming more than just a ‘foreign’ language, and what language policies are recommendable in the media industries of such countries? As part of an answer to these questions, this paper looks at Anglicisms in the Danish subtitling of English-language TV programmes.
