Abstract
Interpreting is a very specialized field of endeavour. Well-developed skills are needed to achieve a level of expertise that will ensure quality performance. Unfortunately, there are relatively few full-blown interpreter training programs available in the United States, and those that do exist are often expensive or not convenient in terms of time or location for many aspiring interpreters. These circumstances, together with the fact that it is commonly known that many practicing interpreters nowadays were self-taught, lead these novice interpreters to ask how they too can prepare independently for work in this field when attending a training program is not feasible. In this paper, some basic techniques and strategies for self-directed learning and skills enhancement are presented and explained.
