Abstract

The translation of the European picaresque novel in the period covered was at first very literal, but became progressively free, adapting itself to the ideological circumstances and stylistic preferences of each European country. These translations also involved the introduction of new writing conventions and new genres in the reception literatures, which adds to the importance of translation in the development of national literatures.
