Abstract
This paper reports on the findings of a relatively large survey of immigrant and refugee healthcare consumers in New Zealand. Results were also validated against a sample of major healthcare provider groups. Communication problems of various types were found to be the major access barrier and these are discussed in relation to their implications for both public policy and the training and management of liaison interpreters.
