This book provides a brief insight into selected topics of German-language translation studies in a Western context. Its interdisciplinarity is discussed, including how it is reflected in the different approaches. In addition to linguistic and semiotic approaches, communicative, cultural, cognitive and functional orientations come into play. In this context, the Leipzig School has played a central role, pioneering the development of the discipline. The main merits of translation criticism as well as the function of translation in a globalised environment are also touched upon.
