This paper analyses the relative position of adverb and negation in no longer and not yet combinations in the languages of Europe. Several factors are argued to be at work. Those factors are listed in order of importance. For the majority of the languages in Europe the placement rules in the two clusters are identical. A second factor is the dominant word order type. Third, no more clusters are more often non-compositional than not yet clusters. Fourth, word order can be exploited to reflect scope. Phrase quantification adverbs can be borrowed and it is plausible that sometimes the negative word order is borrowed too, or calqued.
