Abstract
In literary translation, humor is one of the most difficult elements to transfer across languages. This paper addresses some of the challenges the translator faced in rendering into English the most recent novel by the Brazilian comedian and talk-show host Jô Soares. In many cases adaptation rather than straightforward translation was necessary to replicate the wit of the original. While there can be no one-to-one exportation of humor from source language to target language, with flexibility, inventiveness, and a cooperative author the translator can often create an effect that approximates that experienced by the reader in the original language.
