Abstract
The use of genetic engineering in commercial food products has provoked growing public concern over its impact on food safety and its possible repercussions for society as a whole. The biotechnology multinationals have focused their efforts on the agriculture industry and their research has resulted in the development of genetically modified organisms. The so- called GMOs are micro-organisms, plants or animals whose genetic material has been altered by means of genetic engineering. Products developed using these techniques are considered to be genetically modified foods. One of the main problems encountered in the translation of scientific texts is the lack of an equivalent word in the target language, especially in texts that deal with new technologies. Generally, texts include errors which could only be detected by an expert in the field. In this presentation, the author discusses the problems, possible solutions and the most suitable translations of certain technical terms.
