The dissertation attempts to assess semantic loss in English-Spanish legal translation, taking into account the double asymmetry: between languages and between legal systems. The author illustrates his findings through an analysis of the Spanish translation of the Convention on Social Security. He concludes that, beyond interlingual asymmetry, there is a need for referential accuracy. Apart from that, the translation must have a legal value.
