Shmiher, Taras. 2019. St. Petro Mohyla’s Catechism in Translation: a term system via the prism of axiological modelling and cultural matrix. In Głaz, Adam, ed. Languages – Cultures – Worldviews: focus on translation (Palgrave Studies in Translating and Interpreting). London: Palgrave Macmillan. pp. 211–236.

Abstract

Analysis of two versions of St. Petro Mohyla’s Catechism (The Orthodox Confession of the Catholic and Apostolic Eastern Church, 1640), along with its seven translations, demonstrates the development of religious terms, the relevance of the Catechism to other translations, and the reasons for a successful presence of Slavia Orthodoxa in Western civilisation. The analytical method applied is axiological modelling. The search for values is grounded in etymological and contextual considerations related to the terminology of the Sacraments. The chapter seeks to identify the parameters of how successfully a translation can be received by target readers. It also aims to reveal cultural policies towards religious translation, which shows that every community approaches God in its own way.
