Bartmiński, Jerzy. 2019. Borrowings and the Linguistic Worldview or How to Domesticate Foreignness. In Głaz, Adam, ed. Languages – Cultures – Worldviews: focus on translation (Palgrave Studies in Translating and Interpreting). London: Palgrave Macmillan. pp. 237–258.

Abstract

The chapter explores the role and place of borrowings with regard to the linguistic worldview entrenched in Polish as the receiving language. After the extent of borrowing into Polish is discussed, attention shifts to the status of foreign elements in that language: five levels of assimilation are distinguished along the foreign–familiar (native) continuum. Special focus is placed on Biblical borrowings. Those are effected, among others, through incorporation and modification of Biblical stories, three of which are considered in more detail: the tower of Babel, the parable of the prodigal son, and the story of Cain and Abel. It is proposed that a category of ‘domesticated foreignness’ be distinguished as a component of the target linguacultural worldview.
