The chapter examines Polish renderings of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, starting with the 1910 adaptation by an unknown translator Adela S. (possibly Silberstein, who might have concealed her identity because of the low status of children’s literature in Poland at that time) and ending with the 2015 parodistic version by Wasowski. Alice’s presence in Poland is discussed from the perspective of Lefevere’s concepts of refraction and patronage: Adela S.’s version is viewed as a refraction motivated by the Polish literary conventions of the early twentieth century, while Wasowski’s version as a playful modern refraction. An analysis of various translations reveals changing views on children’s literature and specifically on Carroll’s work in Poland over the period of more than a century.
