Abstract
Dubbing involves linguistic, cultural, technical and creative team effort for the translation, adaptation and lip synchronisation of an audiovisual text. Research on dubbing has grown exponentially, in parallel with scholarship in audiovisual translation in general, ushering in a wide array of works in professional and sociological studies, linguistic studies, descriptive studies, ideological studies, cognitive studies and case studies in the new field of audiovisual translation. This chapter will tackle the main theoretical concepts that lay the foundations for dubbing research, such as synchronies, constraints, semiotic codes, quality standards, prefabricated orality, as well as the four methodological approaches that research on dubbing has been based on to date. This contribution will conclude with some of the implications of the function of contemporary audiences and new technologies in research on dubbing, followed by the role of dubbing in applied fields such as didactics of audiovisual translation and language acquisition.
