Abstract

Quality in interpreting is seen as a dynamic category which depends on the needs and expectations of different users. As interpreting is a multi-stage communicative chain with several parties involved, conflicting priorities are often given by different parties. The EU expansion has exercised a modifying influence on well-established interpreting patterns. The so-called matrix system where all interpretation is provided by native speakers into their A language has been diversified by retour on relay mode for CEEC interpreters. The relay interpreter finds herself in a taxying situation torn between the conflicting requirements of the different parties involved: she has to interpret into a foreign language, resolve somehow the timeless dichotomy of sense vs. Word, take responsibility for the quality of performance of relay-dependent colleagues and at the same time establish her own professional integrity.
