Much conceptualisation remains to be done on the collaboration of translation in AVT, but the challenge lies in the vague knowledge of its process and identification of collaborators. This chapter opens with revisiting ‘collaborative translation’, which is more specifically defined here as joint work made between ‘direct contributors’ in the production of a translation. After a chronological account of collaborative translation practices, the author summarises the related approaches and implications in previous research. The shift from silent to sound, from monolingual to multilingual, has certainly enriched the forms and terms in AVT, but the tension between entertainment and politics, of citizens’ creativity and of authority surveillance calls for more nuanced research. Finally, the chapter anticipates future research could be sought to examine the cooperation and the tension between human agents and technology, and how that new forms of collaboration may alter the patterns of human collaboration and affect translation quality.
