Abstract

Quality is a complex issue in translation studies in general and in subtitling in particular given that subtitles are subject to temporal and spatial constraints. Many scholars in audiovisual translation have extended the parameters of translation quality to the context of subtitling and have arrived at various definitions of subtitling quality. Despite the proliferation of scholarly discussions on the parameters of subtitling quality, the severity of quality issues being faced in the subtitling industry has not been eased. Given the limitations in their scope, much of the existing studies on subtitling quality have examined the parameters or factors that may affect the subtitling output quality from limited perspectives. Accordingly, this study aims to examine subtitling quality from a relatively holistic perspective and investigate the quality parameters in translation studies that can also be applied in audiovisual translation, the parameters of subtitling quality, the factors that affect subtitling output quality in professional scenarios, the development of subtitling quality assessment and the most recent models in this area.
