Abstract

The chapter construes audiovisual translation and media accessibility as cases of decision-making. First, the author talks about some of the frameworks available for analysing decisions in translation. Then, a brief discussion of human judgement at a general level is offered which is then narrowed down gradually to map out different (types of) factors behind translatorial decisions, with a special emphasis on audiovisual contexts. The chapter’s central proposition is that in translation, and all the more in multimodally motivated processes of audiovisual translation and accessibility provision, decisions result from myriad determinants, many of which still remain to be understood, appraised or even identified.
