Abstract
This paper starts off by raising the question whether translation theory is useful. This question entails two further questions: first, which translation theory in particular is dealt with here and, second, how has the theory been applied to the practice or teaching of translation. The paper, furthermore, reports on a case study relating to the translation of the opening sentence of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, followed by an experiment on behalf of the author’s.
