The present article sets out to examine the role of Eileen Chang as a translator: how do her translated works function when her readers are English speakers (or readers) and when ostensibly she is writing for an international audience? More precisely, who makes up the presumded audience for her English translations? The articles discusses how a Chinese writer like Eileen Chang faces the problem of transmitting Chinese linguistic modes in English due to the radically diverse nature of Chinese and English and how the writer has to negotiate Chinese culture for her English readers.
