Abstract
This paper contains an extensive survey of the reception of classical Chinese literature in Bohemia and Slovakia. The focus is on the religious and aesthetic values of traditional Chinese literature, which seem almost to supersede purely political concerns in affecting the choice of texts to be translated. The author also passes personal judgments on the quality of some of the translations, as well as on the achievements of certain translators – evidence again of the emphasis on aesthetics rather than politics.
