Abstract

Between 1994 and 1996 Televisió de Catalunya (TVC) broadcast the French sitcom Hélène et les garçons, which was dubbed into Catalan with the title Helena, quina canya!. In the Catalan version this show presents two translation characteristics which are quite unusual and worth analyzing. The first characteristic is an adaptation of the cultural referents, from the source culture, to the target culture. The second characteristic is a linguistic adaptation: a very formal and conservative language in the French language becomes colloquial and peppered with slang expressions in Catalan. This paper aims to describe both kinds of adaptations and tries to establish a possible explanation for them. Finally, this particular dubbing is compared with other TVC dubbings, with other dubbings in Spain, and with some dubbings in Europe.
