Abstract
Distance education training for interpreters? Surely that is unheard of! Yet in our technology-centred world, requests for access to training via distance education are becoming ever more compelling. In our increasingly multilingual societies, the conventional educational models used for the delivery of existing training programs cannot meet the burgeoning need for trained interpreters to work in the courts, in health care, and in social services. This presentation will examine the challenges facing the Distance Education Interpreter Training Project recently developed by Vancouver Community College (VCC) in collaboration with the Open Learning Agency (OLA) in Vancouver, Canada. Consideration will be given to the integration of alternative educational technologies such as audio, video, computer-conferencing, and tutor-supported self-paced study and its impact not only on the curriculum but also on instructional techniques and administrative procedures.
