Abstract

The first Chinese translation of Sherlock Holmes stories was published in 1896, and by 1916 there was a Chinese edition of the complete stories. The main focus of this paper is to discuss examples from Chinese versions of the Holmes story to illustrate some of the ways in which early twentieth-century Chinese translators approached the task of educating the public.
