Abstract
The paper deals with the problems of translator training, its present state and prospects for the future with regard to the changing translation markets in Slovakia. The market demands show that Slovakia needs more qualified translators able to work for commercial institutions, banks, international organizations, etc. Consequently, translator training for present and future markets reflects these changes. The paper is concerned with the present market-oriented translator training that covers 1. quality language preparation in both SL and TL, 2. preparation in market-oriented subject-areas (economics, law, science, technology, EU institutions), 3. preparation in using reference materials and technical aids, 4. knowledge of translators' rights, liabilities, and status. The paper gives a brief survey of translator training institutions in Slovakia, pointing out the increase in forms (introduction of postgraduate courses) and the change in the contents of study programs. It also introduces a new two-year postgraduate course in the translation of non-literary texts that has been launched at four Slovak universities with the support of the French Institute, the British Council, and the Goethe Institute in Slovakia as a result of the changing market demands. The second part of the paper deals with teaching translation at Constantine the Philosopher University, Nitra and introduces the seminar Translation of Non-Literary Texts which is offered in the Department of English and American Studies as an integral part of the translator training module. The goals, contents, teaching methods used, as wel as the organization of the seminar, are discussed to fulfil the main goal of the course - preparing translator trainees to act as intercultural mediators.
