Abstract

This paper examines the changing role and function of translation teaching in Britain. Disillusionment with the use of translation as a language teaching tool led to a reduction in its use, if not its abandonment. Now, however, translation is increasingly treated as a vocational discipline in its own right, taught predominantly by linguists and experienced commercial translators, rather than by generalists. Machine translation, use of IT and consultation with professional translators all form part of courses in a number of institutions. Nevertheless, the precise relationship between conceptual and linguistic knowledge often remains undefined. The core of this paper is a quantitative survey of translation teaching in British Universities and other such institutions, showing what is taught and where.
