Abstract
This article investigates familiarity with the West in late Qing society. It starts off with an introduction to ‘Western learning’ in the late Qing period. The importation of that knowledge and its influence on Chinese society is also investigated. The Opium War, the collapse of the 1898 constitutional reforms and the Siege of Peking debacle and their implications are also looked into.
