Abstract

This paper presents some visions of the future that were put forward in early modern China. Kang Youwei, Yan Fu and Zhang Taiyan were among the prime figures in this context. They had in common that they believed in the need of change at the material, governmental and spiritual fields based on Western and Japanese models. The paper also looks into late Qing fiction.
