Abstract

This article consists of two main parts. The first part provides a source text/translated text comparison that concentrates on how Wei Yi and Lin Shu tackle the religious material in their joint translation of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The second part is devoted to an examination of the implications of the findings in the first part in the theoretical setting of discourse and ideology, making use of the notions of ‘orientalism’ and ‘occidentalism’ as working concepts.
