Abstract

In this paper the compulsory translation of official matters into Galego by the government of Galicia is studied. This study takes into account a wide range of variables: the volume of material translated, the source languages, the type of documentation that is translated, quality control, work conditions and the profile of the Galician government's translators, bilingualism in official documents and its social impact, etc. The socio-linguistic impact caused by the consecration of the current laws within the administration is also analyzed, as are the so-called "ritual uses" of Galego, which refers to the use of this code exclusively in formal and public interventions where the translation from Spanish plays a fundamental role. Finally, the consultative nature of the Xunta's translation services will be dealt with. This circumstance has given rise to criticism from several professional translation sectors that accuse the Galician government of professional infiltration.
