In this article the author wonders, among other issues, whether much of the discussion that passed for translation theory in China was actually translation criticism. Or was this a theory that concentrated more on description and evaluation of the product than on analysis of process? The paper is based on a study of the key ideas propounded by acclaimed translation theorists of the first half of the century, among them Yan Fu, Fu Lei and Qian Zhongshu.
