Abstract

This paper embarks upon three main issues. First, the discussion how and why the particle ne is used in Japanese, drawing upon research conducted and its constraints. Second, it looks into the problem of translating this particle into English in two excerpts from a Japanese novel. The final topic discussed relates to a literary critical debate on the novel to underscore the interplay between linguistic, literary and cultural factors in the area of literary translation.
