Abstract

This chapter borrows the medieval concept of translatio to discuss the contemporary migrants’ experience and to suggest a non-linguistic approach to translation. The inspiration comes from the work of Jacir, a Palestinian artist who uses translatio and translation in her art (Via Crucis, 2016) as the main concepts to connect and tie together different places, unearth hidden histories, and provide a way to see the places differently. The main question explored in this essay is: if one starts from the modern experiences of migration, what notions of translation can they develop to ‘resemanticize’ the term and add new latitude to the field of translation studies?
