Abstract

This paper explores the workshop process behind Huddleson's translation and localisation of Manel Bonany's La Pell Escrita (2017), a Catalan play that unpacks the unfinished business that haunts a deceased transgender woman. By uprooting the play from Barcelona and anchoring it in Belfast, the translation process carries with it a number of socio-cultural questions as attempts are made to engage with a target audience. However, in order to ensure this process has a smooth transit, and with the aim of meeting the demands of translating across linguistic, socio-cultural, and geographic boundaries, this study incorporates a workshop based on affect theory. The workshop itself was carried out with the local transgender community to better understand their lived realities and to see how their insights can help guide the translation process and an eventual performance. This article explores the thought process that led to such an intervention, what materials were acquired through the community-based workshop, and how these textures or points of inquiry shape the translation outcome.
