The Window Over the Way is a novel written in 1933 after Georges Simenon’s travels to Batumi (currently in Georgia) and Turkey. The novel, one of the author’s “roman durs”, has been translated twice into Turkish, in 1962 and in 2016. This paper studies the two Turkish versions of the novel from the point of view of semiotics of translation. To better evaluate signification and designification in the two translations, Kasar draws upon the systematics of designification in translation, which aims to raise the translator’s awareness to grasp and to reproduce the signs which build the semiotic universe of the original text to be translated. She therefore proposes to compare the two semiotic universes reproduced by the two Turkish translators of the novel in order to observe what each version presents by preserving, modifying or damaging the semiotic universe of the original and whether they allow the reception of the signs and the significations in the target context.
