Abstract
Usually, literary approaches have focused on the cultural context of translation, whereas linguistic approaches have focused on the languages. However, there are now linguistic theories based on the unity of language, culture, experience and perception. This dissertation presents one of them, cognitive linguistics and, more specifically, frame semantics by Fillmore, and discusses its relevance for translation. The analysis of David Lodge's novel Small World is an illustration of how this linguistic theory can help in translation analysis. The two main underlying ideas are: the importance of the role played by cultural frames in linguistic analysis and the usefulness of this sort of analysis when trying to explain many levels of translation.
