Abstract

Within the framework of a wider research project on directionality started at the SSLIMIT of Forlì, this paper presents the results of an analysis focused on how the Verbal phrase is dealt with in simultaneous interpreting (SI) in four directions: Italian-Spanish, Spanish-Italian, Italian-English and English-Italian. To this end, the performances of seven students sitting their final exams were analyzed according to three macrocategories, i.e. strategies (nine categories), problems (six categories) and interferences (one category). To further highlight the impact of the SI mode, consecutive interpreting performances by the same students were analyzed as well. The analysis was carried out at two levels: at intersubject level, aggregating the results for all the students in the two modes and at intrasubject level, aggregating all the results for each student. The suggested approach highlights differences related to directionality and interpreting mode, which, at this stage, can only be considered indicative given the limited sample.
