Abstract

This chapter outlines the possible nature of a more coherent framework for building cognitive translation theories and integrating cognitive frameworks that appear, at first glance, to be incommensurate. To that end, the chapter proposes examining translation products and processes as elements of a complex adaptive system, detailing how some of the properties of such systems could be extrapolated as general principles for reinterpreting cognitive translatology. The objective is not to address every critical issue in Cognitive Translation Studies—although many will be touched upon—but to argue that cognitive translatology is commensurate with complexity thinking and that many ideas from complex adaptive systems theory could greatly inform theory building in the discipline.
