Abstract
This article, the result of part of the authors’ master's research project, aims to describe some occurrences of intertextuality in Machado de Assis' short story "The Mirror". Five English translations will be analysed: Grossman de Caldwell's (1963), Loria's (1995), Gledson's (2008), Chasteen's (2013) and, finally, Costa and Patterson's (2018). Once the story's intertextual network has been identified, the translators' choices regarding these intertextual elements in the five English versions of the story will be examined. The selected extracts are presented in tables. The analysis of the fragments revealed different strategies between the five translations.

Este artigo, resultado de parte de uma pesquisa de mestrado, tem como objetivo descrever algumas ocorrências de intertextualidade no conto “O espelho”, de Machado de Assis. Serão analisadas cinco traduções para o inglês: a de Grossman de Caldwell (1963), a de Loria (1995), a de Gledson (2008), a de Chasteen (2013) e, finalmente, a de Costa e Patterson (2018). A partir da identificação da rede intertextual do conto, serão examinadas as escolhas dos tradutores em relação a esses elementos intertextuais nas cinco versões do conto para o inglês. Os trechos selecionados serão apresentados em tabelas. A análise dos fragmentos identificou estratégias diferentes entre as cinco traduções.
