Abstract
The presence of Asterix in Greece dates back to the late 1960s and has been the making of three different publishers. The adventures of the little Gaul run therefore parallel to the evolution of the Greek language and the representation of society provided by Goscinny and Uderzo goes hand in hand with the deep changes that have affected Greek society over the same period. This chapter will study the problems raised by the transfer of cultural references, an area that frequently resists the translation process, i.e. dress and food codes, traditions, historical references and songs, thanks to the definition of a typology of translation processes in order to identify the leading strategy and the inherent motives guiding translators. This can only be done if one first pays attention to the pragmatic and typographical constraints, the publisher’s translation policy and the interpretative competence of the readers of the translated text.
