Abstract
Most of the research on the thick translation proposed by K. A. Appiah in China focuses on the enrichment of content, with little discussion of the moral attitude towards the source language culture that this concept originally emphasized. In fact, the fundamental goal of thick translation is to establish respect for the source language culture through translation and break the hegemony of Western culture. The Chinese translation of “thick translation” can more accurately encompass the corresponding target intention than “deep translation." In practical translation, formal enrichment may not necessarily generate respect for the source language ethnic group, but rather, deletions can help readers understand and respect the culture of other ethnic groups. In the context of Chinese culture “Going Global," strategically reducing the secondary content of the original work to highlight the essence of the source language culture, that is, “thin translation," can sometimes also achieve the effect of thick translation. Thin translation has become a unique form of “thick translation.”
