Abstract
This paper looks into The Last of the Mohicans, a historical novel written by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826 and two of its translations into French—that of contemporary translator Defauconpret in 1826 and its re-translation by François Happe in 2017. More specifically, the paper focuses on the historical discourse produced by Cooper and on the role of the translators in transmitting it. As it reflects upon the writing of history, the paper aims at showing how the translations and re-translations into French highlight the historiographical questions raised by the novel, as they are woven into the fabric of historical fiction by Cooper himself, and as they are adapted to each context of production by the various translators.

Résumé
Cet article s’intéresse au Dernier des Mohicans, roman historique américain de James Fenimore Cooper (1826) et à deux de ses traductions en français : celle, contemporaine, par Defauconpret en 1826 et sa retraduction par François Happe en 2017. Plus précisément, l’article se penche sur le discours historique proposé par Cooper et sur le rôle joué par les traducteurs dans la transmission de celui-ci. Proposant une réflexion sur l’écriture de l’Histoire, cet article s’attache à montrer comment les traductions et retraductions en français permettent de faire ressortir les enjeux historiographiques du roman, tels qu’ils sont inscrits par Cooper dans la trame du roman historique, et tels qu’ils sont adaptés au contexte de production de chacune des traductions.
