The exhibits texts and their translation in Chinese museums are important means of introducing Chinese history and culture to the world. In a museum, exhibits (as the core text) and museum texts (as the paratext) have an image-word interaction and show a linear coherence, which can be symmetrical, enhancing, complementary, counterpointing, or contradictory. The museum texts help realize the coherent functions. They identify or describe exhibits, exhibit connotative value, and improve their appeal. Taking the English kung fu texts in Foshan Ancestral Museum as the basis of the study, this paper argues that the translator keeps the same mode of linear coherence as that between museum exhibits and the original Chinese texts. If the relations cannot be realized, the translator should adjust the mode of linear coherence and fulfill the coherent functions, so that the aim of effective exhibit interpretation and successful cross-cultural communication can be achieved.
