Abstract

Eleven studies in French of Walter Benjamin's essay on translation are examined here with a view to determining the way the essay has been received by French readers. The article demonstrates that all too often the essay has been read in a partial and biased manner, that its meaning has been restricted, and that the text has been divorced from Benjamin's other works.
