The China Review 1872-1901 was the most influential English Sinology journal of the second half of the 19th century. The China Review has translated and introduced a number of excellent philosophical classics from ancient China. In 1886, the British sinologist Herbert Giles published a translation and introduction of the Tao Te Ching in the journal, asserting that the Tao Te Ching was a fake book and causing a “Daoist war” in the Western sinology community. This article provides an overview of Giles' translation of the Tao Te Ching, studying its translation characteristics and significance.
