Abstract

The Eight Banners official school education (or Qixue,) in the early Qing Dynasty was intended to improve the education of the Manchu people, who were socially and legally privileged, cultivate their translation talent, and consolidate state rule. Qixue originated in the reign of the Emperor Shunzhi, flourished in the period of Emperors Kangxi and Yongzheng, declined in the period of Emperor Qianlong, and withered in the period of Emperors Jiaqing and Daoguang. The development of Qixue can be attributed to three factors: emperors’ support, officials’ advocacy, and scholars’ promotion. The factors that led to the decline and abolition of Qixue include the intensification of ethnic integration, the banner people’s lessened willingness to learn, and the slack management. There were two different ways of translation training in Qixue, namely, in general Eight Banners official schools and in specialized translation schools, like Manchu-Chinese translation schools and charity translation schools. Translators cultivated in these schools became an important source of officials who were responsible for processing and translating documents.
