Abstract
A comparative analysis of two French translations of one of Michelangelo’s sonnets (La notte), lays particular emphasis on the links between separate segments of the poem and its symbolic context and structure. This analysis leads to an attempt to demonstrate how the translation of each of the segments is dependent upon the correct apprehension of this underlying symbolic structure. In examining the trails and errors of translation, the problematic of meaning in poetry is underlined.
