Abstract

The article analyses the tendency in Finland today to Anglicise Finnish. Using the Nokia corporation as a case study, Pryce establishes links between foreignisation as linguistic phenomenon and the larger socio-political context in which it occurs. By extrapolation, the fact that Nokia seems to relish in the foreignising of Finnish - its business ethos is non-nationalist - has interest for the exploration of power relations between English and various languages of minor circulation world-wide.
