Abstract

The author observes that the moment he writes this article, very little work has been done on the field of film translation. He lists various reasons why film translation has been problematic for translation theory, including material difficulties, the scope of the field, the atheoretical nature of existing studies, doubts on the theorisability of the subject and the so-called Quantum Mechanics problem. He opposes these reasons by making clear that linguistic theories (relevance, equivalence,…) and branches such as cognitive psychology, cultural studies, the psychology of decision making and polysystems can yield rich results in the study of film translation.
